White Electronic Designs Corporation (WEDC) was created in October 1998 by the merger of White Microelectronics and Electronic Designs, Inc. The resulting company was a leading provider of state-of-the-art semiconductor memory products supporting the telecommunications and data communications markets and one of the largest providers of memory products to the US military. In January 2001, WEDC acquired Panelview, Inc. a top supplier of enhanced flat panel display products based in Portland, Oregon. In January 2003, WEDC acquired Interface Data Systems, Inc (IDS) based in Phoenix, Arizona. IDS designs and manufactures keypads, graphic overlays and sensors for original equipment manufacturers.
Today, WEDC is a global provider of advanced technology solutions. Although core strengths lie in providing leading edge microelectronic solutions, WEDC also offers enhanced display products, a variety of keypads, graphic overlays and biosensors that can be manufactured for extreme environmental conditions. System integration capabilities allow WEDC to combine all of these elements into a fully integrated product.
WEDC provides high-density memory products and multi-chip modules to industries requiring high density component integration and high relaibility. Commercial products include:
- Memory Modules
- Memory MCP
- Industrial SDRAM Components
- PCMCIA Cards & IDE Drives
- Industrial Grade Compact Flash Cards
Defence Microelectronics
WEDC provides integrated silicon and advanced packaging solutions that suit the requirements of today's engineers. High reliability ceramic products are manufactured and tested in accordance with MIL-PRF-38534 and MIL-PRF-38535, created by DSCC to provide standardized fabrication, documentation and testing.
Full design, fabrication and test capabilities are available for a wide variety of Multi-Chip Packages (MCPs), Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) memory, processors and combination MCPs for demanding applications. Additionally, WEDC microelectronic products can be ruggedized and processed for tamper resistance.
WEDC products are available for commercial, industrial and military temperature ranges, and are a vital mode of solving key design challenges, with features that include:
- Flash, SDRAM, SRAM, EEPROM, QML memory and Microprocessors
- MCPs designed to compliment high performance memory controllers
- Advanced semiconductor packaging to reduce board space, power dissipation and design complexity issues while increasing operating speeds and extending product life
- A variety of memory configurations utilizing ceramic, hermetic packages and plastic encapsulated microcircuits
Display Systems
WEDC Display Systems Division (DSD) provides design, manufacturing and certification services in support of high reliability applications for the military, transportation and industrial markets. DSD's knowledge and capabilities leverage the latest technologies developed for the AMLCD monitor industries into advanced, cost-effective solutions for high reliability applications. This strategy, combined with extensive experience in these market segments will allow customers to offer improved performance in their end market applications.
State-of-the-art optical enhancement technology is designed to improve display visibility in harsh lighting environments, and can be customised to suit individual customer requirements. Standard enhanced displays are available from 3.8" QVGA to 15" XGA resolution, and are suitable for applications including medical, commercial avionics, portable outdoor instrumentation, industrial shop floor controls and POS terminals.
Electromechanical Products
Located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the WEDC Electromechanical Products Division designs and manufactures interface devices and electromechanical assemblies that offer the highest quality and most cost effective solutions for OEMs in commercial and military markets.
Facilities include the ability to meet build-to-print requirements for integrated switch panels and keyboards, front panel assemblies and stand alone terminals. WEDC manufacturing capabilities include machine shop, precision assembly, environmental testing and finishing capabilities, and are AS9100/ISO9001 Registered, Calibration Compliance to ISO 10012 and ESD Controls - Reference MIL-STD-1686.
Interface Electronics
Located in Columbus, Ohio, the WEDC Interface Electronics Division is a leading supplier of both membrane and elastomer keypads, with a reputation for high-reliability and high-durability products. Using proprietary technologies, such as high temperature plastic dome-forming and through-hole circuitry printing processes, WEDC products consistently surpass standard industry specifications. The result is a reliable, durable, ergonomic keypad that will exceed your expectations. A significant feature of WEDC elastomer keypads is the ability to mount them over sealed membrane keypad circuitry to create a system that is impervious to contaminates. Critical for applications in harsh environments and for those in which a user needs to be able to clean the keypad surface, such as with medical instrumentation. The result is a durable keypad that is sealed against the elements.
WEDC manufacturing capabilities range from quick-turn prototypes to high-volume keypad production, with the capability to incorporate printed circuit boards (PCB) with the keypads. Whether the PCB is surface mount, through-hole, or a combination of both WEDC can handle the entire product life cycle, including sourcing of components. Their extensive experience allows them to design and manufacture electronic keypad/controller solutions and provide them to you assembled, tested, and ready to go.
Touch Products
WEDC designs and manufactures a range of resistive and capacitive touchscreens which are particularly suited to harsh environment applications, such as industrial computer control panels, POS terminals, kiosks and information panels. Products include 5-wire resistive and spatial capacitive technology, available in standard configurations or custom designed to user requirements.
WEDC's Spatial Capacitive overlay and controller is a revolutionary projected field capacitive touch system. In addition to getting a touch response away from the display surface, the technology is ideal for applications where extreme durability is desired and where a gloved hand might be used. The touch system can couple through heavy work gloves and with the proper integration can be sealed. This makes it a perfect fit for applications where other technologies, such as resistive would be needed, but greater durability is required. Additionally, it is ideal for applications where Surface Acoustic Wave or Infrared is thought to be needed, but sealability is required.
The latest addition to the WEDC touch products range is a complete Tablet PC range enhanced with Touch Screen Technology. WEDC Touch Tablet PCs are developed starting with Motion Computing's Tablet PC platform. Available in 8.4 inch (Pro 8 Series) screen size, the Pro Series Touch Tablet PCs are compact and offer exceptional mobile performance with Intel(r) Centrino(r) Mobile Technology. They are complete with Microsoft(r) Windows(r) XP Tablet PC functionality and have wireless capabilities for optimal mobility and performance.
